One of the most harrowing things to happen to me was to stand in the trenches at Ypres and be able to see the enemy trenches, only hundreds of metres away. I cannot imagine what it must have been like to see your enemy fall and know you killed him. People say "It was him or me" or "It was a war and we didn't think about it," but what about when you sleep?
My grandfather joined the East Yorkshire Regiment-probably at Hull, as we are from Middlesbrough-and fought at Ypres with the 1st Battalion.
It was this experience and my few memories of a man I hardly knew which prompted me to write my spiritual ghost story.
