I will NEVER accept work from an Asian again.
I say this not out of a dislike of Asians, but out of a dislike of being conned.
Over the last two years, I have been on several writing sites for jobs, and the one commonality is that Asians will TRY to con you.
I don't only mean those in the Asian continent and going into the Philippines, I had a young man from LA attempt to con me last week.
As a ghostwriter there is a lot of risks involved, not least the fact that I have to trust my client to pay for my work.
The way on #Upwork is to send the money to a holding company, until the work is done. Once I send the work in, the payment should be forthcoming - I say should be - because there is a huge risk involved.
If the client decided to play dirty, they can tell the firm that the work isn't good enough and you have to agree not to get paid. The writer doesn't lose out financially, as they didn't get the money, but the client benefits because they still have the work you did.
Yesterday, I cancelled a contract because I couldn't fulfill it due to ill health. I'd had my doubts about the client from the get-go. He asked how long to write a 10,000 word story, and I said two weeks.
Rather than politely ask if I could have got it done sooner, he got indignant and said couldn't I do it in a week, when I said no because I had another client, he relented on a 10-day deadline (as if HE was doing ME a favour).
This was the time my doubts got realized, when I cancelled the contract, I went to send a refund - he was supposed to put the money in for the work - there was no money to refund.
If I'd gone through with the work, I would have lost over a week's work without any recourse. Trust goes both ways, and I'll NEVER trust an Asian after this as this is the 20th Asian to try t con me.
The site is good, it's the Asian con-men who plague it who make it bad.
