The story start before WW2, when she and her friends went to local dances in the Middlesbrough area. One of the places she visited was frequented by a couple, the man's name was Freddy Turnbull, who by all accounts was a likeable person. Freddy had a girlfriend, who didn't drink, and didn't like to hear people swear.
War came and the girl got called up to the ATS, by all accounts she hated it there. The girls drank heavily, and didn't think anything of swearing.
Freddy didn't get enlisted, as he worked as a metallurgist in the iron works, his work was considered vital to the country, as was my uncle John's job as a stevedore at Whitby docks.
On one leave, Freddy couldn't take his girl to the station, he worked the 6:00 p.m to 2:00 a.m. shift, so she had to go alone. A few hours after she left, her father went to the works to break the sad news to Freddy. She hated the ATS so much, she hung herself rather than go back.
This action changed Freddy's personality, and he became morose -- who wouldn't -- he continued on with his work, and never made any more friends.
After the war, he took a post to India teaching Indians how to use furnaces. Because they didn't agree with what he was saying, the threw Freddy into the molten metal.
Fortunately-- if I can use the word -- he wouldn't have felt a thing, at those temperatures,if the toxic vapours didn't choke him, he would have been BURNED ALIVE, before he could feel anything.
Many of us remember the scene in Quatermass 2, when the people are at the furnace, and are warned not to take the goggles off, and one person gets his goggles ripped off as he falls in.
That is a Sci-Fi film classic, this story is real.
