I never served at Marham; the incident I am on about happened when I was stationed at RAF Lossiemouth www.raf.mod.uk/raflossiemouth/, in Scotland - I couldn't have been further from Noffolk - without going into the Scottish highlands.
I was at work - in the photo section - when I heard somebody call my name. I went to the Sergeant's office by the front, after being invited in, he asked if I knew anyone at RAF Marham. I didn't, as I had no idea where it was. I had a friend from RAF Cosford alsdomain.weebly.com/at-the-blogstop/raf-cosford who was posted to nearby RAF Coltishall www.spiritofcoltishall.com/history but I didn't know anyone at Marham.
As the parcel wasn't for me, I didn't collect it and I assumed it was sent back. I never found out who sent in, or how they knew where I was?
Being a motorcycle enthusiast, and having an interest in aviation history, I had heard of most of the Air bases in Norfolk in one way or another. A lot of the UK race circuits are former USAAF airbases -but the name Marham never came up.
I will need to remember this incident when I do my book on my RAF life for www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/. There was another mystery that had me puzzled for many years, this one happened during my term at RAF Laarbruch www.forgottenairfields.com/germany/north-rhine-westphalia/dusseldorf/laarbruch-s443.html, in Germany. This was solved by my late friend, Faye, who lived in Canada. The answer is so simple we had to laugh.
