Regular readers of the blog will recall that I write for the children's charity http://thepeacockwriters.weebly.com/. My stories are usually about a young boy called Johnny Cooper, and are based on my life in @Yorkshire.
The stories I write about the adventures I enjoyed as a child, are a far cry from the world I grew up in. I was born in Middlesborough.
The child on the motorcycle side car, in the dark sweater is me during the early 1960's in Berwick Hills.
The city is like many other Victorian areas with terraced houses leading directly to the mills, in nice straight lines.
Until we moved to the Berwick Hills area, we lived in the type of houses depicted in books by @Catherine Cookson. I have wondered about writing books in her style, but as I lived in the hard times of the 1960's I don't want to revisit them in my writing.
To many people, the 1960's mean trendy London shops and the times of the #Beatles, to people in the North East of England it is recalled as the beginning of the decline of the steel industry.
If the times were hard, at least we had a community spirit in those days. That type of community spirit will never return.
