I read an article about a writer who was given a large advance. To be told at the 11th hour that the firm pulled the plug before the book got to print.
Not only did he not get paid, but he over run the loan.
My philosophy is simple. Advance/ Loan call it what you want. The financial situation is the same, you won't see a nickel until you clear the loan, and the bigger the amount, the longer it takes.
I may be over simplifying the situation, that is how I see things. As I said "It won't happen to me."
In this day of e-books being a writer is a killer of a job. We spend ages writing books, only to see a few nickels.
On line magazines rarely pay for work. They view a writer's article as trying to build a brand not make a living. I researched many jobs and came to the conclusion, all they want is cheap PR. I can't see the point, because most pay firms with a rep for PR to do that. Why ask somebody with no rep? Unless you are a cheap skate, and wish to take advantage of struggling writers.
I have read some howlers of bad grammar on posters, to some extent it does make a little sense.
