Making the headline news
The furore came because in the article, I said I was considering quitting writing and I had fellow writers wishing I wouldn't.
The laugh came because one writer on the site - no names - people who know me will recognise this description. He is a hack writer of cheap sci-fi who thinks he's the bees knees, he is not only rude but vey arrogant. To the people who don't know who he is, his name - as his work - is irrelevant; suffice is to say that I outsell his books by a long way.
This writer took umbrage because he thought I was referring to him because he hadn't been blogging on his site for weeks. I pointed out, if he'd read the article NOT the headline, it was clear the writer was me.
This goes to prove what any good journalist will tell you The Headline sells the story.
I bring this story up again because I find its relevance has never left my mind. I have never got to a point in my writing when I didn't think of quitting. Even at the height of my popularity the lack of sales for other than my hit series caused concerns.
To some friends, I am a successful writer - some say best-seller - but I rarely break $10 a month in sales. This month is heading to by my worst in the last two years on Draft2Digtal with 2 sales so far; but that is still better than the last six months on Amazon. I cannot recall my last sale on Amazon, if I'm correct it was back in November.
Even my earnings from my ghostwriting www.upwork.com/freelancers/~0115a52654d3cda29a hardly make it worthwhile continuing, with one job every six weeks - the pay works out to about $10 a week.
The majority of my time is spent blogging to try and get a few sales. Recently, my friend Julia, placed an article on her Facebook page www.facebook.com/TheIndiePENdents/?fref=ts to help me. The article - scroll down to read - is from my Upwork profile and features a part of a story i was writing. It has been read by over 9,000 people and "liked" by 2,000 of those people but the bottom line is that the article has produced neither sales for my e-books or offers of freelance work.
I have said many times, and I make no apology for repeating this, people will read anything if it's free - you only need go to a doctor's and see people reading old magazines to know I am telling the truth - but if they are asked to pay for the writer's time that is different.
