The rescue was from a Polish ship which had got caught off the mouth of the River Tees, North Yorkshire. She had hit a sand bar and got stranded in an 80 mph blizzard. Despite the captain saying they were okay, the lifeboat stayed in the area for a few hours before the rescue was started.
The ship's crew were taken off safely and the lifeboat crew were awarded the Gold medal for bravery.
At the time, the offices could only verify that the rescue took place, where it was and the medal. They did say if I found more information I should contact them again.
With my mother going into a care home, a lot of family history has passed to me. Among this selection is a collection of newspaper items about my Uncle Len, and some photographs of my grandparents. Until now, I had no photos of them, only vague memories. Grandmother passed away when I was 3, and we moved to Bristol when I was 7, after that the next thing I knew about my grandfather was he died when I was in college.
