The above quote was from last night's (April 9th) book signing by Harlan Coben. Mr. Coben was in Bristol on a pre-release tour of his latest book "Missing you."
The funny -- yet apt -- quote, describes perfectly the feeling of a writer. You spend months if not years writing your book in the hope somebody will like it.
I have a varied collection of signed books which include one from Joe Abercrombie, Raymond E Feist and Brent Weeks, along with ones from indie friends. I also have some books which I assume are signed and numbered by the authors -- I sent to their site for limited editions-- and some which I presume are signed by the author, as I got them from market stalls. One of the oddest in the collection is a pre-published James Herbert. I know it's pre-pubbed as the editor's notes are on the pages, and it has no official cover image.
I don't know when the next signing is that I will attend.
